Let's call it what it is: Today was a lazy day.
Well, we didn't plan for it - it's just the way the cards fell after Mr Ethan woke up at 1am and stayed up (and playful, and talkative and restless) until at least 4.30am when P-J took over and I hoped to get some rest. By 9am the kids were now enjoying a good and proper sleep and the adults were awake because it's the adult-like thing to do, but not very smiley about it!
The highlight of today was the Independence Day celebrations at Quechee Club from 6pm. We couldn't wait to get there, even though we didn't know what to expect...
It played out almost like the Carnival scene at the end of the movie Grease - but better!
There were stalls and play areas, face painting, balloons, long tables of delicious food (hot dogs, hamburgers, barbeque chicken, pulled pork, salads, watermelon and cookies), a bar area and later, an ice cream stand with a very long queue!
The ladies wore dresses in blue, red and white or denim shorts and midriff tops. I opted for jeans and a tee instead, not knowing that it would definitely be the smarter choice while keeping a close eye on our youngest kid as he attacked the obstacle course -come- jumping castle with glee!
Jorja and I stood in the face painting queue for what felt like an hour. One Grandma behind us quipped, "This lady had better be painting Rembrandts to make it worth the wait!" Eventually she got her princess crown with hearts and a purple jewel and skipped off with satisfied. In that time, Ethan had been to the balloon man for a squeaky, grey elephant, to the tent for a re-fuelling hot dog and to get drinks for all the thirsty queue-ers...
Our last stop before the sunset (at 9pm) was the ice cream stand. Vanilla, Strawberry, Chocolate, Cookie Dough, Mocha Swirl - it was all there. Topped with Oreos, M+M's, Snickers, Reeses, Granola... the list seemed endless. We were just happy to finally get some and we rushed from the stand, to the picnic blankets to claim our front row seats for the fireworks...
I know these photos don't do it any justice - neither do they convey the boom the way we heard it. For most part, Ethan was saying "Wow" from the depth of my embrace!
It was our first 4th July celebration and it was truly a memorable and wonderful experience.
