Someone told me a story about people in the DRC today. Students, who had gone from learning their ABC's in the sand under the tree, to those same students' first reader being an E-book! Somehow, they had missed the paper era altogether!
I thought about that some more, as I considered how much time this family spends online...and how much paper we like to have around us.
Well, the paper issue looks like a girl thing in our house. Jorja is started to appreciate notebooks and lists just like I do. P-J has always preferred the 'it's in my head or on my phone' option. And Ethan, well, with his love for body art, the paper's only good for scrunching up and throwing around!
During our time here, we have spent an increased amount of time surfing the internet - for places to visit, weather forecasts, sending and checking messages, calling back home and documenting this entire adventure with stories and photos. If I thought that we were coming here to escape that reality, I would've been mistaken.
What I didn't realise what just how much time we would end up devoting to this...
Without trying, we've created a little online routine:
In the morning I check emails (since it's already midday back home) and search online resources for lesson work ideas.
In the afternoon we log on to the local calendars to see what's happening in the surrounding Towns, look for new recipes and make a call or two
And in the evening, we upload photos to share, write the blog, check the news and write a few emails.
Did I mention that woven in between all of this, is a kid or two asking to watch a movie or cartoon?
Yes, I must admit that these two have watched a lot of that over these past weeks. What started out as a coping mechanism for the 24+ hour trip here, became the ideal distraction, or a free babysitter.
Look at the table below:
Is this even possible? And how do we cut down these days?
