A little late this week, but for good reason. We were in Burlington yesterday - 9 weeks to the day - when we arrived from New York JFK Airport; Hot, tired, excited and heavily laden. This time, it was just the two of us in the car taking the 90 minute drive up for a meeting (but more on that another time) and then driving back down.
Being without the kids for such an extended period was quite...weird. I'll be the first to admit that I was looking forward to some time to myself or at least with strictly adult company. I even started zoning out a little in the car, but then realised that the driver was quite a Chatty Cathy! I can see why the kids prefer him on the morning school rush ride in Cape Town.
The route is serene. Lush green mountains, leafy rolling hills and wide open roads... As we get closer to the City though, the traffic grows, a few more long haul trucks speed by and you'd be forgiven for feeling a little anxious after all these weeks tucked away in the quiet Upper Valley. We passed luxury vintage cars - presumably on their way to The Tunbridge World's Fair and considering that it was almost the same distance as driving to Swellendam from Cape Town, were surprised when we reached Burlington without needing to stop for a break.
While we were on the road, the children lapped up teachings and treats from Ma. First school, then play - or so they say! By the time we returned at 6pm, we were absolutely pooped and they were going at 100 miles per hour with questions, comments and demands. And just like that, we were shoved back into reality.
It was a great time out - especially with My Guy - and he wouldn't mind if I said it here, but he missed the kids way too much and couldn't wait to get home to them. I may take the bus next time. Kidding.
Oh wait! On Sunday, E chose the location for our family outing. We visited Maple Lanes ten-pin bowling and had a blast! Maybe I wouldn't be so excited if I hadn't been on the winning team... Nah, I still would! E has a natural flair for the game and J had to work hard to carry her partner, Dad. He started finding his rhythm toward then end, but by then it was too late. Ha ha! E even started doing a moonwalk celebration dance every time he cleared! We got back wearing those silly Sunday afternoon smiles with very full love tanks.
