June never could've imagined it would go by so fast...

Saying goodbye to the Cycle Tour office

During event times, the crew live off breakfast packs. It's the 4am stale muffin/soggy cheese sandwich/cold apple combo that it sometimes a little hard to swallow given that our digestive systems are still asleep...among other reasons! And of late, one of the race admin staff had taken it upon herself (to nominate her husband to) put together something a little more user friendly. It was very well received! To this end, we spoke fondly about breakfast packs even outside of event weekends. And on my last day in the office, I was presented with a breakfast pack of the super fantastic variety - it was a fitting send off. I probably should've secured a service like this for my college days ahead!

Despite my efforts to depart quietly, our Team put together a special brunch (to celebrate???) my going away and I was touched by the kind words and well wishes. I hadn't realised how almost 7 years of contracts there had made me as much a part of the office as the furniture!

I checked in with the timing guys at an event recently. Being on the other side of the chute is going to take some getting used to. Maybe they'll have a runner job for a student at a future race?

Back to school and Back to industry

We started June off with a proverbial bang! I head back to school for the first time in (let's say) 10 years and P-J went back to an industry kitchen for the first time in no less than 7 years. For some reason, I always seem to start something in Winter. Check out the far right picture - that's me trying to study and not freeze to death at the same time. The picture on the left is a familiar scene on Ethan's bed when there's trouble getting them to sleep at night...and the middle picture (that refuses to be rotated counter-clockwise) is a snap taken in class, with Andrew the dummy and some very young and inquisitive colleagues!

P-J's gig at The Village Idiot seems to be going better than was expected. The cool weather has not put a dampener on Cape Town night life and weekend's socialising. And as P-J has said from the beginning of his chef career, "People will always need food!" The venue is fully booked most nights and this in turn results in long hours and full days all week round for all the staff. I don't envy them one bit - even if they are surrounded by pork belly, spit-braai-ed lamb and boerewors burgers on a daily basis!

Jorja's 6th Birthday

I still can't believe that this little Miss is 6 already and yet I know others find it hard to believe that she's only 6! As is becoming tradition, we celebrated Jorja's birthday in a unique way - She chose to attend Kids Club first from 6pm - 7.30pm and invited a few friends to join her too. Afterwards, they made their way to Papu & Yaya's house for a pudding party: Malva, Ice Cream and toppings, Cupcakes and more! Plus, we managed to find The Little Mermaid dvd, freshly popped popcorn and a functional fireplace so we were set for the night.

Miss Jorja has been maturing well this year - not only in the classroom but also at home, interacting well with her baby brother and paying attention to the guidance that her Dad and I are giving. She remains a firecracker-like, skirt swishing, tree-climbing, shrill shrieking little lady, a compassionate big sister and a exceptional daughter.

Odds and ends...

There was much more that happened in June - including me falling down a manhole, saying goodbye to Jax, my shadow week at the hospital, a beautifully inspired birthday tea party, progress at swimming for Ethan, Sam's first few hours away from Mom and the start of another fantastic school holiday time for Jorja... Never a dull moment!

Papu Comes to Visit 3

Since the last post we've had two more weeks of Papu visiting with us and then one very long week since we dropped him off at the airport. In mid-July we went to Burlington Airport en route to my final exam, and recreated what should have been his triumphant arrivals lounge experience in June. PJ took him to Lake Champlain and surrounds while they waited for me to complete the test and then treated me to "the test is done" lunch. We spent a rare hot afternoon at Silver Lake Park swimming with friends, we shopped 'til we dropped at The Vermont Spot, we were able to see the clean-up operations happening in flood-stricken Montpelier and even managed a quick stop at the Vermont State House.  We visited the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe and enjoyed Ben and Jerry's ice cream at their factory. We took a drive around my old VTC campus in Randolph and Gifford Medical Center where I practiced this past year. We drove through the Dartmouth campus and the Boat House on the Conn

Papu Comes to Visit

For the last 10 days we have been enjoying having Papu here with us so much that we completely forgot about the plan to post daily blog entries about his trip!  Yes, I considered this special visit the perfect reason to resurrect the blog and write more... Well, it turns out that when your Dad is visiting from overseas, you don't have much time for anything else besides trying to do 180924523093284 things, be in the moment, and take a photo of it! Here are a few photos of the first week-and-a-bit: Day one. The equivalent of driving to Plettenberg Bay I'm told! We experienced smooth open roads in some parts, midday congestion in and out of Boston, heavy downpour with flash flood warnings towards Burlington, and some interesting GPS navigation. But the passenger and his luggage reached us safely at the end of a long day. At last he was able to wrap his arms around Papu! Ethan and Adrienne arrived back from their trip to Lake George the day after Papu arrived and have been doing

Papu Comes to Visit 2

It's been another 10 or so days of Papu in Vermont with us, and he's experienced more heat, severe flooding, Summer holiday camps, a long-awaited touristy activity, and many, many late dinners!  We returned safely from Plymouth VT just before mudslides, flooding and road erosion caused all major routes between there and home to be closed. It's been raining nonstop some days! The snack shack that we visited in Papu's first week suffered flooding similar to what they experienced in 2011's Hurricane Irene, and many more surrounding towns have been struggling to get on top of water diversion and mopping up efforts. We are fortunate to be safe and able to access necessities, and bar one wild drive in a thunderstorm last Thursday, we are trying to time outings around extreme weather forecasts. Of course, this means that we haven't been out much! Last Saturday, however, the sun was shining, and PJ took the crew into Boston for a bit of sightseeing. They visited Fenway
