June never could've imagined it would go by so fast...

Saying goodbye to the Cycle Tour office

During event times, the crew live off breakfast packs. It's the 4am stale muffin/soggy cheese sandwich/cold apple combo that it sometimes a little hard to swallow given that our digestive systems are still asleep...among other reasons! And of late, one of the race admin staff had taken it upon herself (to nominate her husband to) put together something a little more user friendly. It was very well received! To this end, we spoke fondly about breakfast packs even outside of event weekends. And on my last day in the office, I was presented with a breakfast pack of the super fantastic variety - it was a fitting send off. I probably should've secured a service like this for my college days ahead!

Despite my efforts to depart quietly, our Team put together a special brunch (to celebrate???) my going away and I was touched by the kind words and well wishes. I hadn't realised how almost 7 years of contracts there had made me as much a part of the office as the furniture!

I checked in with the timing guys at an event recently. Being on the other side of the chute is going to take some getting used to. Maybe they'll have a runner job for a student at a future race?

Back to school and Back to industry

We started June off with a proverbial bang! I head back to school for the first time in (let's say) 10 years and P-J went back to an industry kitchen for the first time in no less than 7 years. For some reason, I always seem to start something in Winter. Check out the far right picture - that's me trying to study and not freeze to death at the same time. The picture on the left is a familiar scene on Ethan's bed when there's trouble getting them to sleep at night...and the middle picture (that refuses to be rotated counter-clockwise) is a snap taken in class, with Andrew the dummy and some very young and inquisitive colleagues!

P-J's gig at The Village Idiot seems to be going better than was expected. The cool weather has not put a dampener on Cape Town night life and weekend's socialising. And as P-J has said from the beginning of his chef career, "People will always need food!" The venue is fully booked most nights and this in turn results in long hours and full days all week round for all the staff. I don't envy them one bit - even if they are surrounded by pork belly, spit-braai-ed lamb and boerewors burgers on a daily basis!

Jorja's 6th Birthday

I still can't believe that this little Miss is 6 already and yet I know others find it hard to believe that she's only 6! As is becoming tradition, we celebrated Jorja's birthday in a unique way - She chose to attend Kids Club first from 6pm - 7.30pm and invited a few friends to join her too. Afterwards, they made their way to Papu & Yaya's house for a pudding party: Malva, Ice Cream and toppings, Cupcakes and more! Plus, we managed to find The Little Mermaid dvd, freshly popped popcorn and a functional fireplace so we were set for the night.

Miss Jorja has been maturing well this year - not only in the classroom but also at home, interacting well with her baby brother and paying attention to the guidance that her Dad and I are giving. She remains a firecracker-like, skirt swishing, tree-climbing, shrill shrieking little lady, a compassionate big sister and a exceptional daughter.

Odds and ends...

There was much more that happened in June - including me falling down a manhole, saying goodbye to Jax, my shadow week at the hospital, a beautifully inspired birthday tea party, progress at swimming for Ethan, Sam's first few hours away from Mom and the start of another fantastic school holiday time for Jorja... Never a dull moment!

The week that has been...

"Life as we see it", right? My time so far at the cycle tour office is reminding me of just how demanding life in this age can be - a time seeking instant solution and gratification: We want it now! We won't wait! This is what makes a relaxing, easy going activity seem so rewarding! We've always been fortunate enough to cook with pleasure - obviously more for mine! And since returning from BA, we've also found great enjoyment from leisurely strolls in the neighbourhood or at Sea Point promenade. Take time for this! Here's what we've been a part of this past week: We were encouraged to see a group of students from Bishops come out (even in the rain) and join with the FBC team in painting a mural on the school's new diningroom and kitchen wall. For news and updates visit: http://www.fbcschool.org.za/ We joined over 15 000 walkers in a quest to feed the hungry children in the Western Cape, by participaing in the Blisters for Bread walk on Sunday. We tackl...

That's so amazing about Grace

Scrolling through some photos this afternoon, I came across one of our friend Tarrin-Rae and her new baby girl, Isla, born last Thursday 31 October 2013. Isla Grace Graham I struggled to contain my own emotions as I observed this special moment in Tarrin's life (and new Isla's too) and thought back to my own experiences. I immediately asked Tarrin if I may use this to share a bit more of what I some times feel as a Mom... At first glance, I see relief . She's finally here! We can see her face in real life and we can say out loud "I am a Mommy!" Like my own kids, Isla was in no hurry to be born and labour was induced. What's worse than having to wait 40 weeks to meet your newest family member?? Having to wait longer still! I must confess, that this feeling was mixed with a fair dose of disbelief  on my part too - when I sat quietly resting between visitors and feeds, I had to pinch my literal self and realise - the baby was here. Then I see comfort ....

Day 87

Between the two of us, P-J packs a better suitcase hands down. In our younger days, when we did SU Teen Camps together, he'd casually grab a duffle bag and walk past his shelves - just before it was time to head for the Training Weekend! P-J is the guy you want to pack a snack bag. This is where his Chef really shines - since he isn't a snack kind of guy - and yet he knows what will make a good snack for others. He's the guy you want to have packed your padkos for a road trip. He's also sworn off egg mayo rolls, so you know you're safe! Over the years, he has also demonstrated an increasingly high level of Tetris-style packing capabilities. Ask the crew that went with us to Knysna last year - 8 adults, 3 kids, 4 bikes with enough food, blankets and clothes for a long weekend. This guy knows what he's doing. And whichever way he packs...he always has exactly what he needs, plus what he wants, and a little bit extra still. Just ask me how many pairs of sho...
