Week 18

This Thursday marked 18 weeks State-side! I had to do a count (and recount, and count again) to check that I hadn't completely lost track in my semi-hibernative state!  The cold temperatures and early sunsets plus the heavy snowfall this past week can really tempt us into retreat and confuse our days and times.

Meet Baby's new toy doll, "Baby".
I have children that I enjoy playing with dolls. Fancy that?? Dressing them up and carrying them around, but mostly trying different hairstyles and inviting them to take a swim at bath time. Ya-aaaa-aaay... A family from Church gifted a beautiful doll to Baby last week. She comes with long brown hair, a soft cashmere sweater and a pink glitter skirt. I definitely could not have styled her better myself! Baby was beside herself to receive it and promptly named her, "Baby". To be fair, the dog was first "Dog" too.

Snowfall!
We woke up to a Winter Wonderland on Tuesday. The kids said that it felt as if they were in a snow globe. We made it to Story Hour with no trouble but were glad to be back inside at home for the rest of the day. On Wednesday and Thursday it turned to slush and then iced over (very happy not to be driving sliding around then) and on Friday it came down heavily again. THIS time we were ready for it, and the kids were only too happy to venture out and build that inaugural snowman of the - premature - season! The locals will tell you, Winter's come early just for us!

Jesse Tree Project craft day
Last Saturday I spent the entire day crafting with ladies at our church. The mission: create 2500 ornaments for the Jesse Tree Project. I arrived just before 9am to find tables set out all around the hall with directional signs saying "If you like to paint" or "If you can thread a ribbon" or "Are you happy to play with glue and possibly get your fingers burnt?". There really was something for everyone (that was willing to craft). I was heading towards one of the simpler tables, when the leader of the Jacob's Ladder table made eye contact and well, that was that. We made 100 ladders before I moved on to miniature writing pads (and tiny pencils made from carved toothpicks) and then finally bedazzled crowns with hand twisted shepherd's hooks on the end. We stopped only to eat (of course) and correct our posture. "The Jesse Tree ornaments show Jesus' lineage and God's redemptive story from Creation to our celebration of His birth at Christmas, through 25 ornaments." The gift packs will be given out at a special tea at the end of this month. I can't wait to see them all!

Preparing for Thanksgiving
We found E setting sail in the Mayflower, having fashioned the boat out of a cardboard box and written down all the facts that he could remember from the First Thanksgiving. Ma has been reading the stories to the children and they've been creating all sorts of colourful crafts including a stick turkey and various hanging crafts. We will display them ALL on Thursday and take a photo before permanently packing them away, with respect.

Kentucky Derby Pie
Around this time of year, the ladies at Church are talking pie! Pumpkin is a firm favourite, while others prefer pecan, which J pronounces "pee-kahn" to the delight of the locals. Then along came a lady that declared Kentucky Derby Pie as the best pie to try! It's pecan nut pie with chocolate chips. Have you ever? Well, to prove just how delicious we would all find it, she brought some to Bible Study on Thursday ...and left with an empty pie dish. Yum!

Week 22

In no apparent order, some of the highlights of the last week have been: Carolling around a log fire with a Yankee Swap, cookies, coffee and new friends Last Friday evening we set off for somewhere near Norwich for our Adult Bible Fellowship (ABF) Christmas party. As visitors to the church, there's already an element of insecurity...now to be heading into someone's home, as Dear Husband would say, "socially awkward levels were at an all time high" - Was the gifts we brought to swap suitable? What was a Yankee Swap anyways? Could you bring something besides sugar cookies to share? Do you have to take off your shoes at the front door? Are you allowed to park people in when the alternative is further up an un-lit, ice covered hill? There were so many unknowns! But once I saw the wood burning in the fireplace I relaxed a lot . Yankee swap was fun! DH was no. 2 to pick a gift, and landed a torch  umm...flashlight, as the locals call it , and it looked as though h...

The Great Update

If you've stuck around, ever hopeful of a new blog post, I'm here to reward (?) your long-suffering. Read on... If you'd prefer the abridged version here it is: The last post before today was published in March 2020. Today is August 2021.  It has been a minute. What a year it has been. Since our last post we've gone from school-at-home in March to June 2020, to summer holiday under our first "lock-down". School for the kids was back in-person for the entire academic year beginning August 2020 until June 2021 and their reward was ten weeks of summer holiday ... and now here we are, one week away from the 21/22 school year - masks and all. Somewhere in between that, I graduated from college and participated in our online graduation ceremony as the 2021 student speaker! ( Yes, I don't know either... ) Completing the two-year degree felt really good and I'll admit that a part of me misses it already...but don't tell anyone I said so.  It seems as thou...

Week 9

A little late this week, but for good reason. We were in Burlington yesterday - 9 weeks to the day - when we arrived from New York JFK Airport; Hot, tired, excited and heavily laden. This time, it was just the two of us in the car taking the 90 minute drive up for a meeting (but more on that another time) and then driving back down. Being without the kids for such an extended period was quite...weird. I'll be the first to admit that I was looking forward to some time to myself or at least with strictly adult company. I even started zoning out a little in the car, but then realised that the driver was quite a Chatty Cathy! I can see why the kids prefer him on the morning school rush ride in Cape Town. The route is serene. Lush green mountains, leafy rolling hills and wide open roads... As we get closer to the City though, the traffic grows, a few more long haul trucks speed by and you'd be forgiven for feeling a little anxious after all these weeks tucked away in the qui...
